UK-based Yamna, a company in the green hydrogen sector, has signed an agreement with Açu Port to reserve land within the port complex in northern Rio de Janeiro for a green ammonia plant, the companies announced on January 7.
Yamna’s ammonia plant, the company’s first project in Brazil, is designed with a production capacity of up to 1 million tonnes per year.
According to the British company, which is backed by net-zero asset manager HYCAP, the final investment decision for the plant is expected to be made in 2027. The production of the first molecules is slated to begin in 2030.
Green ammonia is produced using renewable resources and clean energy instead of fossil fuels. It has a wide range of applications, including the production of green fertilizers and the storage and transportation of green hydrogen.
For Açu Port, the project aligns with its strategy to diversify its operations—currently focused on oil, mining, and logistics—and establish itself as a hub for energy transition solutions.
The port, operated by Prumo and controlled by EIG and Mubadala, has signed multiple agreements in recent years with major companies like Eletrobras and Vale for low-carbon economy projects.
The complex already features a licensed area of 1 million square meters for hydrogen and derivative production plants. With the new partnership with Yamna, an additional 2 million square meters will be reserved for developing sustainable projects.
“This partnership highlights Açu’s strategic role as a hub for sustainable energy solutions and reflects our commitment to innovative projects that contribute to the global energy transition,” said Eugenio Figueiredo, CEO of Porto do Açu, in a statement.
“We look forward to playing a key role in the success of this project by leveraging our expertise in green hydrogen and ammonia,” added Abdelaziz Yatribi, CEO of Yamna.
