The Port of Cabedelo is experiencing its “best moment” in 90 years, according to Ricardo Barbosa, former state legislator and current president of Companhia das Docas da Paraíba (Docas-PB). As the port marks its nine-decade milestone, Barbosa emphasized that it is “revitalized” and ready for a major economic leap with Paraíba’s inclusion in the container shipping network.
“The port, under Governor João Azevêdo’s administration and our management, is enjoying the greatest period in its 90-year history. It has been modernized, revitalized, and is ready to take on new challenges. The major breakthrough, which we aim to solidify in 2025, is the introduction of container cabotage. We have never handled containers before, and this will be a game-changer,” Barbosa said.
He highlighted that Cabedelo is on track to become one of Brazil’s most modern ports, with infrastructure upgrades set for completion by March. “We will have an efficient, modern, and competitive port. This combination will secure Paraíba’s place in the container shipping network, representing a major boost for the state’s economy,” he explained.
Barbosa outlined a vision where vessels with a capacity of 2,400 to 3,000 TEUs would call at the port daily, driving regional economic growth. “Negotiations are underway to make this a reality this year. It will be a historic milestone for Paraíba,” he stressed.
The Docas-PB president credited the port’s progress to the support of Governor João Azevêdo, who, he said, recognizes Cabedelo’s potential as a driver of regional development. “None of this would be possible without the dedicated team working at the port and, most importantly, the governor’s backing. He sees the port as a key pillar of Paraíba’s economic growth,” Barbosa concluded.
