Port of Santos Clears Abandoned Ship

The NM Srakane, which had been inactive and docked at the Port of Santos since 2020, was relocated this Thursday (13) in an operation coordinated by the Brazilian Navy, the São Paulo Port Authority (CPSP), the Santos Port Authority (APS), and Vintage Trading SRO, the vessel’s owner.

Authorities confirmed that the ship was transferred to a designated area within the Santos estuary equipped with the necessary infrastructure to keep it securely moored. Its new location poses no risk to navigation or the environment.

The operation followed a plan initiated in October 2024 and was executed by a specialized maritime salvage company after all legal and safety requirements (NORMAM-204/DPC) were met. The ferry crossing was temporarily suspended for 12 minutes to accommodate the maneuver.

According to a press release, the vessel’s owner requested the relocation after the mooring conditions at its previous berth deteriorated significantly, increasing the risk of structural failure.

“Given these circumstances, the ship’s timely relocation was both necessary and justified to ensure safe navigation and the secure operation of the Port of Santos,” the statement read.
