The port of Arroio do Sal received its first environmental permit

Another step towards the construction of the Arroio do Sal’s “Porto Meridional” was taken. The Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) recently issued a term of reference, the first step towards attaining an environmental license in the country to legally begin construction works. An Environmental Impact Study will be prepared throughout 2022.

The port project is led by DTA Engenharia Portuária e Ambiental. Private investments will total around R$ 5 billion, and the start of the works may take place in early 2023, according to the company’s schedule. After this stage, there will be another 20 months of construction. Ultimately, the expectation is that the first vessel will dock in the second half of 2024.

The company points out that the environmental issue is the most critical part of a project like this since the documentation is vital to obtain a preliminary environmental license.

The endorsement adds to a group of other authorizations emitted by the National Secretariat of Ports (SNP), the National Waterway Transport Agency (Antac), and the Brazilian Navy. The excavation for the port area will take place along an extension of 2.5 kilometers from the seaside.

Also, according to DTA, since waterway transportation is the cheapest, having a port on the Northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul alleviates logistical costs in the state. In addition, the venture will generate new jobs and give a new impetus to the economy of the Southern Region in Brazil.
