The Brazilian association of shoe manufacturers, ABICALÇADOS, has updated the sector’s growth forecast for 2021. According to the data, the production of footwear should grow 12.2% (on average), to 856.9 million pairs, almost 100 million more pairs than in 2020. Even with the increase, the sector should end the year 8% lower than in 2019, before the pandemic. The growth in 2021 will be driven by footwear exports, which should increase by 25.5% (on average), reaching 117.8 million pairs shipped.

The chief executive of ABICALÇADOS, Haroldo Ferreira, points out that there is an improvement in the dynamics of the Brazilian domestic market, but that the main focus is on the international scene, which accounts for around 14% of sales by Brazilian manufacturers. “Much of the growth in exports should come from the increase in shipments to the United States, the main destination for Brazilian footwear, which is increasingly looking for suppliers outside Asia”, assess the executive. According to the most recent data released by the entity, between January and August, 9.13 million pairs were shipped to the United States for US$ 133.44 million, increases of 55% in volume and 40% in revenue compared to the same period last year.
