Above national average: Port of Mucuripe reveals 13.2% hike in cargo throughput

The Port of Fortaleza (Mucuripe) reached a milestone of 2,345,868 tonnes transported between January and June of this year, marking a 13.2% increase in cargo throughput during the first half of 2024.

According to data from the National Agency for Waterway Transportation (Antaq), this year’s figures show a rise from the 2,072,409 tonnes recorded in 2023.

In Brazil, the average growth was 4.28%, while the Northeast region saw an increase of 4.07%. The number of vessel dockings at the Port of Fortaleza also grew, rising from 352 to 484 ships, a 37.5% increase.

Projected Growth in 2024

In a statement, Lucio Gomes, CEO of the Ceará Docks Company, the organization that manages the terminal, acclaimed the figures, articulating that they “confirm the importance of the Port of Mucuripe for Ceará’s development.” He added, “However, we will continue to focus on the company’s sustainable growth and organization. In reality, we are preparing for even greater throughput, conducting studies, developing projects, implementing improvements, and striving for more safety and productivity.”

Gomes noted that the second half of the year is traditionally the peak season for cargo movement at Mucuripe. He mentioned cereals and petroleum derivatives, the most relevant commodities that the port handles, as well as the season for harvesting fresh fruit, as essential catalysts for future expansion. “As for projections in TEUs, we expect to surpass 120,000 units this year, which would represent a 30% increase in this metric,” he concluded.
