Açu Port launch expansion with new warehouse space

Açu Port and Minas Port have announced a significant expansion project, marked by the inauguration of two new cargo storage warehouses on July 4th. These additions to the port complex are set to enhance its competitive edge. Each warehouse spans 6,345 square meters and collectively offers a storage capacity of up to 70 tons. The event also includes the opening of an adjacent yard, measuring 11,000 square meters and with a capacity of up to 65 tons.

A key feature of the new structures is the automation of cargo reception and release processes, which ensures greater efficiency, cost reduction, and increased productivity. The expansion is expected to boost annual cargo throughput by over 500 tons.

The opening of these warehouses is essential to meet the growing demand at the port complex. Beyond handling ore and grains from Minas Gerais, Porto do Açu is establishing itself as a strategic hub for transporting goods from Goiás, including corn, soybeans, and copper concentrate. Additionally, Porto do Açu plays a crucial role in importing fertilizers and coal for nickel production in the state.

In March, Vice-Governor Daniel Vilela and a delegation of business leaders from Goiás visited the port terminal in São João da Barra’s fifth district. This visit reinforced partnerships for exporting Goiás’ production and importing new inputs for its production sector.

Another significant development at Porto do Açu is the decommissioning of oil platforms. The P-33 platform is the first of three units under a new contract to be docked at the port, marking the beginning of Brazil’s first Sustainable Decommissioning Hub. This initiative is expected to have a substantial impact on the regional economy.

The port will also dismantle platforms P-26, P-37, and additional units, which have been sold to Gerdau as scrap metal. The steel from these platforms will be recycled into new products. The P-33, the first to be dismantled, arrived at Porto do Açu on February 14 for initial services, including docking, hull cleaning, and waste disposal.

Decommissioning is a critical phase in the lifecycle of an oil production platform. This safe and efficient process is conducted when production in an oil field ceases. It involves a series of technical, legal, and environmental procedures that must be meticulously executed to ensure safety and minimize environmental impacts.
