Açu port performs never-seen ilmenite operation

Last week, the Port of Açu Multicargo Terminal (T-MULT) concluded a first-of-its-kind ilmenite (iron titanate) cargo movement operation at the port complex.
The cargo originated in the city of São Francisco de Itabapoana, upstate Rio de Janeiro, bound for China. The never-seen-before-at-the-port operation was conducted in partnership with the freight forwarder Action, which chose Açu due to the advantages of T-Mult, bringing costs down by 30% compared to other players.
Such price differences were essential to establishing this ilmenite export operation as a new storage area was developed to meet the requirements that this logistical operation entailed. In addition to ilmenite, the Multicargo Terminal also exported, on the same process, 1,600 tonnes of oil risers to another customer, optimizing logistics and reducing the cost by using joint loading.
After shipping 12 thousand tonnes of new cargo, Açu may become Action’s partner in other operations, totaling around 100 thousand tonnes of ilmenite shipped. This type of cargo, usually transported in bulk, is an essential input for several industries and is widely used in pigments, metal alloys, and the protection of blast furnace linings. With this shipment, the Multicargo Terminal further expands its portfolio, reaching 16 types of cargo handled for 44 different customers.
To meet the growing demand at T-MULT, the terminal plans to immediately expand its dry dock area by constructing a bulk yard, a dedicated yard for general cargo, and a container yard, in addition to new permanent warehouses dedicated to storage. Currently, the terminal has 350 meters of mooring pier (which can be expanded to 500m).
In six years of operation, T-MULT has already handled more than 5 million tonnes. In the first half of this year alone, there were more than 820,000 tonnes, 9% more than in the same period last year.
