Açu Port targets sugarcane biomass for green methanol production
Jun, 23, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202324
Prumo, under the leadership of CEO Rogério Zampronha, has recently entered into a memorandum of understanding aimed at facilitating the production of green methanol from biogas at Açu Port in Rio de Janeiro state. The company has not disclosed its partner in its project as of yet.
The project will capitalize on the biomass generation potential from sugarcane in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro, where the port is located, to produce biomethane. As a by-product of sugarcane processing, carbon is obtained, which can be combined with hydrogen to generate methanol.
The production of methanol through this method is considered environmentally friendly since the emissions produced throughout the biomass chain are mostly absorbed.
Zampronha shared during the ESG Energy Forum organized by the Brazilian Institute of Petroleum and Gas (IBP) in Rio de Janeiro that two parallel routes are being designed for taking on this project: one involving electron technology and the other utilizing biomass. These routes complement each other and enable the production of aviation fuel (SAF), biomethane, biogas, and green methanol through the combination of carbon and green hydrogen.
Methanol is emerging as a potential solution for decarbonizing marine fuels, as the shipping industry currently accounts for around 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to the memorandum of understanding for green methanol production, Prumo has signed a series of agreements with various entities to explore the production of green hydrogen at Açu. These agreements involve Casa dos Ventos, Comerc Eficiência, Shell, Neoenergia, and EDF Renewables.
The project led by Shell is the most advanced, with the company constructing a pilot plant at the port using resources from the Research, Development & Innovation (RD&I) clause of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP).
