One of the country’s major logistical assets, the port complex comprising Porto Itapoá and the Port of São Francisco do Sul, launched the advertising campaign in June: “Babitonga Bay Complex – it seems complex, but it is phenomenal.” With a strategic location, the Bay is situated between the cities of São Francisco do Sul, Itapoá, Joinville, Araquari, and Garuva, 215 km from Florianópolis and around 100 km from Curitiba.
The Babitonga port complex is crucial to the economic development of Santa Catarina and the country, hosting key terminals such as Porto Itapoá, the Port of São Francisco do Sul, Transpetro, Terminal Gás Sul, and several hinterland port terminals. This natural and economic ecosystem, which includes one of the largest industrial centers in the country, was responsible for over 56 million tonnes in throughput in 2023, accounting for more than 60% of the Santa Catarina market share.
Cássio Schreiner, president of Porto Itapoá, emphasizes the strength of the project – the 4th largest container port terminal in the country. With nearly 13 years of operation, Porto Itapoá has made Babitonga a significant player in the containerized cargo segment. “Our intention with the campaign is to reaffirm the importance of the Babitonga Bay Complex for the national and Santa Catarina economy on several fronts, from how we value the local community, the potential for business growth, frequent expansion, and environmental protection,” says Schreiner.
The campaign will last three months and will be broadcast on social media, TV, and through branded content. A dedicated landing page will also be created to consolidate information about the port complex.
The advertising pieces will highlight the region’s stunning natural beauty, the sustainability of the enterprise, socio-environmental projects, job creation, the modernity of operations, and initiatives aimed at developing local communities.
Investments and Infrastructure
Companies in the Babitonga Bay Port Complex have been advocating for further public investments in infrastructure. The primary need is the dredging of the access channel to Babitonga Bay, which would allow for the navigation of larger vessels that currently cannot sail along the Brazilian coast. Currently, the access channel accommodates ships capable of carrying around 10,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). With the dredging, the channel will be able to receive larger ships, with a capacity of around 16,000 TEUs.
In addition to significant productivity gains, the dredging will make navigation safer and less dependent on tides, thereby increasing efficiency. The project is budgeted at R$300 million and is nearing the issuance of its Installation License by the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), which will authorize the start of works.
The project also includes an important environmental benefit: the recycling of sediment removed from the site. For the first time in Brazil, in projects of this nature, the sediment removed will be used to replenish the beaches of Itapoá, which currently suffers from severe coastal erosion. The Municipality of Itapoá and the Port of São Francisco do Sul signed a commitment agreement in 2021, securing the measure.
