After an 35% increase, terminals in Paranaguá update their 1st quarter projections

The terminals operating at the Port of Paranaguá expect to export 6,762,816 tons of solid bulk in the first three months of the year. On average, the forecast is to ship 2,254,272 tons of soybeans (grain and bran), sugar, corn, and wheat per month, from January to March.
The projected volume is about 35% higher than the 4,991,434 tonnes handled in relation to the first quarter of last year. The expected increase should be mainly driven by the increased volume of soybeans to be exported in the first quarter of the year.
“If the weather conditions allow and enough contracts are closed, we have all the right conditions to meet the expected goal,” said Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná. “Our structure, team, and expertise are all prepared to receive the new crop, both at the port and at the terminals.”
As for soybeans, the companies intend to ship 4,560,915 tons through the Port of Paranaguá in the first quarter. On the other hand,1,404,901 tons of soy bran are expected.
“Specifically in terms of soy products, we attested that its flow has never stopped. In December, here, a lot of soybeans were exported. And in the first 15 days of January, the pace was kept the same”, says Garcia.
While in December 2020 the volume of soybeans exported was 30,428 tons, in the last month of 2021, it reached 650,238 tons. In January 2021, 30 thousand tons of the product were registered. This month, until the 18th, 381,211 tons had already been loaded.
Market
According to experts, the soybeans that are being shipped now come from the past crop, which producers were holding back, waiting for the best time (and price) for sale.
“Producers can hold back products to wait for better sale prices. However, moments like this, in which the new crop is about to be harvested create the need to sell what is in storage”, explains André Maragliano.
Now, with closed contracts and good market prices, the volume of soy that arrived at the port increased. “This unexpected volume began to increase from October to November.” “We didn’t have an ‘offseason,” he explains.
Other products
Also in the first quarter, bulk sugar exports should reach a volume of 405 thousand tons. Corn should be shipped a 395 thousand tons volume by the Paraná port operators. Finally, the wheat export forecast is 33 thousand tons.
To make these predictions, the port operators took into consideration which contracts were already in force, as well the goals they intend to achieve during the period.
