Agribusiness operations raise Port of Santos throughput to new record levels

The Port of Santos has once again set new cargo throughput levels. The first half of 2022 saw the best performance for the 6-month period (80.7 million tonnes, an increase of 5.7% over the same period last year). In June alone, 14.1 million tonnes were registered, with a growth of 6.7% over the same month of 2021.
Agribusiness cargoes continue to be ahead of this performance. In the first half, shipments of products from the soy complex grew by +10.9% to 26.1 million tonnes, corn by +184.1% to 1.8 million tonnes, and cellulose by +60.4% by 3.9 million tonnes. The increase of fertilizer landings (+23.1%) to 4.1 million tonnes also stood out. Also noteworthy were the shipments of meat products (+41%), with 1.2 million tonnes; fuel oil (+14.3%), with 1.4 million tonnes; citrus juices (5%), with 1.2 million tonnes; and sulfur discharges (+19.9%), with 1.0 million tonnes.
The highlights in June were soybeans, with 3.5 million tonnes (+21.3%); cellulose, with 680.2 thousand tonnes (+46.4%) and corn, with 325.0 thousand tonnes, indicating the beginning of the harvest season of this grain.
Solid bulk
Solid bulk operations showed an increase of 7.4% in the first half compared to 2021 (41.7 million t), the best performance for the period. The share of soybeans was 56%; of sugar 18.4%; 11.5% for soybean meal, 4.5% for corn, and 10.6% for fertilizer.
Liquid bulk
In this category, the result was 4.8% higher than the first half of last year, reaching 9.3 million tonnes, the best outcome recorded in the period. The share of cargo in the volume of liquid bulk was 24.3% for diesel and gas oil; 18.5% for fuel oil; 13.9% for citrus juices; 9.2% for caustic soda; 6.4% for gasoline; 4.6% for alcohol, and 2.8% for ammonia.
Containerized cargo totaled 2.4 million TEU, a reduction of 0.1% compared to the first six months of 2021, which shows stability and, in absolute numbers, is the second best mark for the period.
Moorings
In the month of June, there was an increase of 2.1% compared to 2021, with 433 moorings. The total for the semester registered a rise of 2.8%, with 2,526 moorings.
Trade flow
The year-to-date participation of Santos in the Brazilian trade flow was 29.1%. Approximately 32.1% of these foreign trade transactions passed through the Port of Santos involved China as either origin or final destination. São Paulo remains the state with the highest participation in foreign trade transactions through the Port of Santos (52%).
