Agriculture leads exports to USD 1 trillion over the past 10 years in Brazil

Despite all the internal and external hardships of the Brazilian economy, agriculture continues to lead to record exports.

Exports reached US$ 140 billion in the last 12 months, and the value of foreign sales in this industry will reach, for the first time, US$ 1 trillion over the past ten years.

Revenue growth is driven by strong foreign demand for agricultural products and recent price increases. As of the end of July, lower-level international negotiations have begun.

Price increases also impacted inputs, a field on which the country is largely reliant. Since the change in this sector was stronger than that in commodities, the expansion of imports was more intense than that of exports.

The accumulated revenue from exports in the last 12 months is 25% higher than in the corresponding previous period. Imports totaled US$ 51 billion and were 65% higher than in comparison to the previous past twelve months.

This year, spending on fertilizers reached US$ 16 billion, and on pesticides, US$ 3.35 billion, according to data from Secex (Secretariat of Foreign Trade), updated this Wednesday (3).

Brazilian agriculture exports from January to July already reach US$ 93.34 billion, and the country’s main partner is China.

The Asian country’s imports of products from Brazilian agriculture were worth US$ 33 billion. The United States follows in second with US$ 5.7 billion.

The Asian presence in the Brazilian market is growing. In addition to China, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan make up the leaders of that region in imports of Brazilian products.

Two items stand out in national exports: soybeans and animal meat, destined to supply China’s demand.

Foreign soybeans’ sales from Brazil are slower this year and have fallen by 9%. Revenues, however, due to the acceleration of international prices, increased by 23%.

In the case of meats, the volume in the first seven months of the year was 4.2 million tonnes, with no significant difference from the same period in 2021. Revenues, on the other hand, increased by 33% to US$ 10.2 billion.

Due to the acceleration of prices, coffee gained prominence this year. It occupies the third position, with sales of US$ 5.2 billion. External prices increased by 58% in the year, ensuring suitable exporters’ revenues.
