The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed the occurrence of an outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) in Piauí, at a subsistence farm that raises pork. The agency is investigating the causes and actions necessary for the total elimination of the virus from the site, and rules out the possibility of restrictions on Brazilian shipments of pork since the region in question does not export.
The property, located in Parnaíba, PI, has been sealed off and the state veterinary service is adopting the procedures determined by the Ministry for the elimination of the outbreak, including the sacrifice of pigs and the disinfection of the affected property, in addition to investigations to trace the probable origin and epidemiological links.
The diagnosis was confirmed by the Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory in Pedro Leopoldo (MG), through molecular diagnosis (RT-PCR in real time).
Piauí is not included in the CSF-free zone, nor are ten other states: Alagoas, Amazonas, Roraima, Pará, Amapá, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Pernambuco. “The boundaries between the CSF-free and non-CSF-free zones are protected by natural barriers and checkpoints, where procedures for surveillance and risk mitigation to prevent the introduction of the disease are continuously adopted,” informed the ministry.
The CSF-free zone in Brazil concentrates more than 95% of the entire Brazilian pig industry and 100% of the exports of meat and pork products. It has not registered the occurrence of CSF since January 1998.
