Ten of the world’s largest global agricultural trading and processing companies have issued a joint statement committing to develop by COP 27 a sectoral roadmap to contain global warming by 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. In a movement articulated by the US and UK governments, the companies ADM, Amaggi, Bunge, Cargill, Golden Agri-Resources, JBS, Louis Dreyfus Company, Olam, Wilmar, and Viterra sign the commitment.
According to information provided by JBS, the declaration – to be announced at the World Leaders Summit on Forests and Land Use at COP26 – signals its commitment to take urgent collective action to include other stakeholders in its supply chains. The goal is to identify solutions at scale to make even faster progress in eliminating deforestation and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The joint statement follows a meeting in October convened by the US government’s Special Climate Envoy John Kerry and UK Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng and is supported by the Tropical Forest Alliance, linked to the World Economic Forum, and by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
