Amazon drought: cargo ships resume calls to private port in Manaus
Nov, 23, 2023 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202343
The Chibatão Port, the largest private port terminal in Latin America, announced that it has started receiving cargo ships since the 22nd of last month. The first to dock in Manaus was the Aristole (Mercosul CMA CGM).
“The return [of port operations] is crucial to restore the logistical flow of the region, even with the ships’ capacity reduced by 50%, which is similar to the same period last year,” the port management informs.
The return of cargo ships to Manaus occurred almost two months after the suspension of navigation to the capital due to the rivers’ dry season. On October 12, Aliança Navegação e Logística Ltda., one of the country’s largest cabotage companies, had suspended trips to Manaus.
In October, the National Department of Transportation Infrastructure (Dnit) began dredging sections of the Madeira and Solimões rivers to allow the passage of ships.
Until Monday, goods for the Manaus Industrial Pole were brought by barges from Pará.
