Amazon ports flourish as export outlets in Brazil

According to data from Brazil’s National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq), exports and imports of grains like soybeans and corn reached almost 22.8 million tonnes in the third quarter of the year in the region known as the Amazon Arc, comprised of states in the northern region and Maranhão state. The other regions handled approximately 1.8 million grains less in the same three months.
From January to September, the volume of corn transported in Brazil’s North totaled 19 million tonnes, an increase of 86% compared to the same period last year. This movement helped to offset the 8% drop in soybean output and input, which totaled 31.5 million tonnes.
According to Irani Bertolini, president of Fetramaz (Federation of Logistics, Transport and Freight Forwarding Companies in the Amazon), this scenario is the result of overcrowding of ports in southern Brazil, the cheaper logistical costs in the Amazon region, and the productivity growth in agriculture.
“The northern arc grows every year. It didn’t use to be so structured. It still has bottlenecks today, but it is restructuring itself in such a way that freight services are increasing,” he claims.
