Amcham: Trade with the US reacts

The increase in steel prices on the international market and the heating of the real estate market in the United States led to revenue growth of 33% in Brazilian exports to the country in the first half of this year. It is the highest percentage on record for the period since 1997. The performance followed the 35% increase in total sales from Brazil to the world in the period.
The magnitude of the increase is related to last year’s drop of 32% over the same period in 2020, but Abrão Arab Neto, executive vice president at the American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham Brasil), assesses that the positive indicators show a reaction from the bilateral transactions. “The significant resumption of bilateral trade is noteworthy. It is stronger on the export side, but there is also growth in imports”, he says.
The absolute value of Brazilian sales to the US, US$ 13.31 billion, has not yet recovered the level of the first half of 2019, which was the highest on record, at US$ 14.72 billion. In imports, the US$ 16.4 billion in the first half of 2021 surpassed 2020 first-half results by 8.7%, until then the highest revenue on record at US$ 16 billion. The increase in American imports, however, was below the average of total imports: 26.5%.
In the first half of the year, bilateral trade with the US totaled US$ 29.8 billion, 12.7% of Brazilian trade with the world, only behind China with its 29.1% share.
