Ammonia-powered ship expected to start sailing in 2026

The world’s first Ammonia-powered cargo ship is set to start sailing in 2026 as part of the Yara Eyde ship project. Yara Clean Ammonia, North Sea Container Line, and Yara International have joined forces to create this low-carbon vessel.
The ship will navigate a maritime route between Norway and Germany, operating between Oslo, Porsgrunn, Hamburg, and Bremerhaven. From 2026, Norwegian companies will be able to trade their products with low carbon emissions within and outside Norway, according to the involved parties.
Yara International, a Norwegian fertilizer-producing chemical company, took on the role of the cargo owner.
“The fertilizer produced in Porsgrunn will be transported with zero emissions to Germany, reducing Scope 3 emissions by 11,000 tons of CO2 (carbon dioxide) per year,” the statement said.
How It Works:
Typically, ammonia production uses fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas, emitting significant amounts of CO2. However, according to a CNN report, Yara Clean Ammonia plans to supply a blend of “blue” and “green” ammonia for the Yara Eyde.
In “blue” ammonia production, CO2 emissions are captured at the source and stored underground, while “green” ammonia is produced using renewable electricity.
The partnership aims to promote low-carbon fuels to enable reductions in maritime transport emissions.
“Low-emission technologies must be brought to commercial scale in the next decade. It is imperative to encourage carriers to choose low-carbon fuels,” said Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand, President of Yara Clean Ammonia, in the statement.
Yara Clean Ammonia and North Sea Container Line are establishing a joint venture to realize the Yara Eyde, while NCL Oslofjord will operate the ship. The joint venture aims to become the world’s first liner operator to focus exclusively on container ships powered by ammonia.
