A crew member onboard Common Galaxy, a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier, tested positive for malaria. This marks the second confirmed case of the disease on the vessel in July. According to g1, the ship remains in the anchorage area in Santos.

The vessel, which arrived from Ivory Coast to Santos, underwent disinsection after the first case was confirmed on July 7. Although malaria is not contagious from person to person, all crew members were tested.

In a statement to g1 on Wednesday (17), the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) confirmed that a second crew member tested positive for the disease aboard the ship. The individual, who is asymptomatic, is being treated on board. The exact date of diagnosis has not been disclosed.

Since arriving at the Santos complex, the Common Galaxy has been anchored in the Port of Santos. Last Thursday (12), the Santos Port Authority (APS) announced that the ship would dock on July 15. As of Wednesday (17), the new docking forecast was for Sunday (21).

Other Cases

The first confirmed case on the Common Galaxy occurred on July 4 on the ship Genco Picardy, which departed from the African continent on June 20. The patient, a 27-year-old Filipino crew member, was disembarked and taken to Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa in Santos.

The man exhibited symptoms, including fever, body pain, and muscle weakness. Dr. Gilberto Martins Maria, who treated him, stated that the patient was frail. “We disembarked the patient, took him to the hospital, and performed the necessary tests. Once malaria was confirmed, he was hospitalized,” Dr. Maria told TV Tribuna, a Globo affiliate.

According to the Santos Port Authority (APS), the Genco Picardy is expected to dock at the Port of Santos on Thursday (18) at the Guarujá Sugar Export Terminal (Teag), although this date is subject to change.

The first crew member on the Common Galaxy who tested positive for malaria had symptoms including fever, body pain, difficulty breathing, and numbness in his hands. He was also hospitalized. Similar to the Genco Picardy, the Common Galaxy underwent disinfection procedures.
