Uruguay’s national ports administration, Administración Nacional de Puertos (ANP) has put forward an alternative plan for building a dedicated terminal for Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) in a different location from the original proposal by MSC’s terminal arm subsidiary, TIL (Terminal Investment Limited).

DatamarNews reported ANP initially rejected the idea on practical terms. However, according to Port Strategy, ANP vice president Juan José Domínguez informed of a “political decision” to accept the new multipurpose terminal project, provided the location is changed.

Katoen Natie, operators of Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP), Montevideo’s only dedicated container terminal have objected to the plan believing it will negatively impact their business. According to Port Strategy, the company is currently negotiating a concession extension beyond its 2031 expiry date.
