ANTAQ confirms cabotage vessels are operating close to 76.2% of capacity

A study by the Development and Studies Management (GDE in Portuguese), part of ANTAQ’s Performance, Development and Sustainability Superintendence (SDS) indicates that the capacity of the cabotage container fleet reached 76.2% in August last year.

Data from the Port Performance System (SDP) indicated a 28% growth in cabotage from 2010 to 2018, jumping from approximately 127 million tons to 163 million tons. In this period, the highlight lies with container shipping, which has grown systematically since 2010, and registered a market share of 18.1% in 2018 consolidating its position as the second largest cabotage cargo type, second only to liquid bulk.

When analyzing the evolution of container tonnage used in cabotage services, considering the first semester of each year of the historical series – 2010 to 2018, a growth of 204% can be seen over the period, with an acceleration in the first semester of 2019 in relation to the first half of 2018, with a 24.7% increase in the tonnage carried.

This behavior can be explained, in part, as a consequence of the truck driver strike in May 2018 and the subsequent establishment of the road freight table, which made cabotage transport more attractive to cargo owners.
