ANTAQ delegation visits US to enhance inland waterways management

Between September 25 and 29, a delegation from ANTAQ is on an official mission to the United States, focusing on Inland Waterways and Navigation Management. This international mission marks an important step in the agreement to be signed between the Brazilian agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the entity responsible for managing the entire Mississippi Valley since 1824.

Directors and specialists from ANTAQ will accompany representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on visits to strategic locations, including the Port of New Orleans, the Center for River Studies at Louisiana State University, and the USACE Dredging Center, among others. ANTAQ’s General Plan of Grants (PGO) prioritizes the development of Brazilian waterways.

According to ANTAQ’s Director-General, Eduardo Nery, the collaboration with USACE is crucial to expedite and enhance the processes the agency must go through to reach the ideal concession model for this type of transportation, which he describes as “the final frontier of intermodality in Brazil.”

“What USACE has to offer us is know-how to help us enhance the qualifications of our staff regarding the economic, engineering, environmental, and regulatory aspects of waterways. By the end of this week, we will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with our hosts, an important step preceding the formalization of the agreement we will celebrate,” Nery stated.

Also participating in the mission are Director Flávia Takafashi and Directors Lima Filho and Alber Vasconcelos, along with managers from the areas of Concessions, Regulation, Studies, Legal, and Social Communication.

Visit to the U.S. Regulatory Agency

Concluding the program of the U.S. Mission, the delegation will make an institutional visit to the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), the U.S. government agency equivalent to ANTAQ, responsible for regulating the sector and ensuring competitiveness and integrity in the ocean supply chain.
