The National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq) is analyzing the Northeast Logistics project, which intends to construct four new terminals in the Pecém Industrial Port Complex to handle minerals, grains, fertilizers, and containers.
According to Valor Econômico, a total of R$ 2.35 billion will be invested in the venture.
Transnordestina Logistica, a subsidiary of the CSN group led by businessman Benjamin Steinbruch, intends to construct a terminal that will house, in addition to large silos, a railroad yard for Transnordestina trains, a railway that has been under construction for 16 years since 2006.
Currently, there is no short-to-medium term perspective for completing this project which intends to connect the 1,500 km stretch between the agricultural zone of Southeast Maranhão to Piauí and the ports of Suape (PE) and Pecém (CE).
The Nordeste Logística project has already undergone a public call, a 30-days period in which any interested parties can voice their intent to take over the construction of a Private Port Terminal, also known by the acronym TUP.
The Pecém TUP project will take up 83 hectares of land just a few kilometers from the port. The investors, whose identities have been protected, are waiting for Antaq’s approval to begin implementing the project.
