The National Waterborne Transportation Agency (ANTAQ) held Public Hearing No. 03/2024 on Tuesday, April 23, to gather input, feedback, and recommendations for enhancing technical and legal aspects associated with an upcoming bidding process for the concession of operations at the Port of Itajaí.

The proposal outlines investments totaling R$ 2.8 billion over nine years, with plans for expanding the port’s infrastructure in tandem with its territorial growth, implementing initiatives to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and addressing various operational enhancements.

The forthcoming auction aims to bolster the port’s capacity, drive down operational costs, and catalyze job creation and economic development in the municipality and its environs.

The concession will not only provide a structured framework for port activities in Itajaí but also ensure legal certainty for the region while fostering logistical efficiency in the southern region and enhancing port competitiveness.

Wilson Lima Filho, the reporting director overseeing the concession process, emphasized, “There will not be competing port authorities bidding for control. It’s essential to clarify that the Port of Itajaí remains under singular public authority.”

Nineteen stakeholders participated in the public hearing, offering verbal contributions. The deadline for submitting feedback is May 10, 2024.

The chart below compares container exports and imports at the Port of Itajaí from January 2019 and December 2022, the period in which container operations began to dwindle at the port. The data is from DataLiner.
