The Port of Pecém has broken successive throughput records, and one of its operators, APM Terminals, responsible for loading and unloading containers in the metropolitan region of Fortaleza, reached the unprecedented mark of 500,000 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) in 2024. This milestone was achieved at 9:40 PM on November 25.
This figure exceeds the two best annual performances in the history of APM Terminals Pecém. In 2022, 418,226 TEUs were operated; in 2023, the total reached 482,044 TEUs.
Here’s a historical outlook on container exports and imports recorded at the Port of Pecém between January 2021 and October 2024. The data is derived from Datamar’s master data product, DataLiner.

After computing the numbers for the 30 days of November, the company closed the 11th month of 2024 with 507,942 TEUs handled, a 19.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023, at some 425,138 TEUs.
In container imports, the company saw a 16.5% growth compared to the period from January to November 2023. Exports also grew by 19.9% over the same period.
“This result is a natural consequence of our strong performance. The growth trend has been confirmed, and we achieved the long-awaited 500,000 TEUs mark before the end of November. However, we want more, so we will continue working to close 2024 with even greater results,” said Marcelo Gurgel, Commercial Manager of APM Terminals Pecém.
APM Terminals, an independent division of A.P. Moller-Maersk, specializes in developing and operating container terminals worldwide, raising industry standards for over 50 years. The company has facilities in 62 key locations across 33 countries, with several more under development. It employs approximately 22,000 people and received 27,000 ship calls at its terminals in 2023.
