APM Terminals Suape completes equipment purchase for fully electrified terminal in Brazil
Jun, 07, 2024APM Terminals Suape has invested in 28 new pieces of electric equipment intended for use in the terminal. The equipment will be provided by SANY, a global leader in port machinery. The project requires a thorough development process to customize every item, ensuring advanced technology, high efficiency, and safety. This initiative is consistent with APM Terminals’ commitment to decarbonizing its global operations through the use of electric container handling equipment.
The new terminal, situated in the Governador Eraldo Gueiros Industrial Port Complex (Suape), Pernambuco, has been under construction since February and is expected to commence operations in the second half of 2026.
“APM Terminals Suape is investing over R$241 million in modern equipment to establish the first 100% electrified terminal in Latin America. This step underscores our commitment to leading the modernization of Brazil’s port sector,” said Aristides Russi Júnior, managing director of APM Terminals Suape.
The APM Terminals Suape project is meticulously designed to meet customer needs, incorporating pioneering sustainability initiatives. Among the 28 pieces of equipment, two are STS (Ship to Shore) cranes with remote control operation—the largest and most advanced available—featuring systems for precise positioning and enhanced safety and productivity. These cranes also include OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology, improving reliability in container handling and safeguarding against equipment damage.
Seven RTG cranes have also been acquired, featuring the same safety devices as the STS cranes and operated via remote control from a control room, enhancing productivity and safety. These RTGs include collision prevention systems and safeguards against lifting locked containers. Additionally, the two Reach Stackers and two empty container forklifts will be the first electric vehicles of their kind in Brazil. The purchase also includes a 16-ton forklift and fourteen electric terminal tractors.
The new terminal will create direct and indirect jobs, driving socioeconomic development in the region. It will offer improved connectivity and expanded docking windows for shipping companies. Furthermore, APM Terminals Suape will feature its own 5G network, enabling real-time information transmission to customers worldwide, 24/7.
