Apple exports found a good pace in 2022
Mar, 14, 2022 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202212
Despite the lower apple output in Brazil caused by adverse weather, fresh fruit exports started well. In February alone, shipments totaled 3,970 tonnes, up 36% from the same month last year, according to Secex. Revenue in dollars was US$ 2.82 million (FOB), an increase of 27% in the same period.
According to Hortifruti/Cepea agents, the positive performance is a response to the demand of Asian countries, which prefer medium-fine fruits that are predominant at this time of the year. Thus, exports to India rose 148% in February compared to the same month in 2021, while those to Bangladesh increased 51%.
Despite this significant increase in the first two months of the year, experts predict that exports in 2022 will not be significantly higher than those in 2021 due to lower harvest volume and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Because Russia is a major buyer of Brazilian apples (ranking third in last year’s top destinations), Brazil will attempt to divert cargo that would otherwise go there to other countries.
