Apple exports from Brazil fall short of expectations

Despite Brazil’s strongest competitors facing production issues (such as Chile, New Zealand, and South Africa) and the increase in Brazilian output in the 2022/23 season, fresh apple exports did not rise as expected, according to industry experts consulted by Hortifruti Brasil.
This is due to the delay in Brazil’s harvest (resulting in low national stock and the need to quickly replenish it after harvesting) and the high supply in some key destinations, such as India, preventing a significant increase in exported volume. At least, the revenue saw a more encouraging boost.
The main destinations for Brazilian apples were Bangladesh, accounting for 42% of the total exported by Brazil between January and September 2023; India, with 33%; and the United Kingdom, with 9%. It’s worth noting that Russia, which used to hold the third position in the ranking of key destinations, has dropped in rank since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, resulting in sanctions against the country.
