On Thursday, Jan 1, Argentina concluded its first shipment of live cattle to Chile. Four Hereford and Angus bulls were sent to Coyhaique after approval by the Argentine National Health and Sanitation Agency (Senasa). Destined for genetic reproduction, the animals departed from a cattle-raising unit located in the city of Trevelin.

According to Senasa’s press office, before export, the animals were kept in isolation to fulfill a quarantine stage and complete all the diagnostic tests required by the Chilean health authorities.

“This historic event for our country is thanks to the sanitary conditions reached by Argentina that favor the expansion of its livestock production,” said the vice-president of Senasa, Rodolfo Acerbi.

Brazil

Brazil has been exporting live cattle, mainly for slaughter, since 2010. Turkey is the leading destination, but there have also been exports to Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Argentina, Peru, and Colombia. In the last decade, around 2.6 million live cattle were shipped, a volume second only to exports from Australia. However, a 2021 bill pending in Congress wants to ban this type of export.
