Argentina evaluates use of quotas in resuming meat exports

The Argentine government is expected to announce next Tuesday a new export model for beef in the country, according to the newspaper “La Nacion.” Exports were suspended for 30 days last month, and the deadline expires this Sunday.
The publication announced that in order to authorize the resumption of sales abroad, the country will likely start establishing industry quotas. One of the possibilities is for the government to force companies to reduce their export volume by 50% – except for the country’s quotas of kosher meat – in addition to limiting exports of cuts that are popular in the country.
“The idea is that with the new rules, which we are finishing defining, we can resume exports as of next week while still guaranteeing meat on the Argentine table. We want all popular cuts to be affordable for Argentines,” the minister of Productive Development, Matías Kulfas, told the newspaper.
The announcement was scheduled for this Friday, but sources consulted by the Argentine newspaper said that President Alberto Fernández wants to explain the new rules first to the livestock sector, which strongly resists the proposal.
