Argentina has taken another step toward joining the economic bloc composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS. Argentine President Alberto Fernández sent a formal membership application to the Chinese authorities this week.
The submission of the document was celebrated by the Argentine ambassador to China, Sabino Vaca Narvaja. According to him, this is a “historic opportunity” for his country since the current bloc members account for 24% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Also according to the ambassador, Argentina’s entry into the BRICS would mean the “development of a true joint strategy to face the “challenging global scene,” declared Narvaja, according to the Russian news agency Sputnik.
In order to get support to join the BRICS formally, the Argentine government had already made a similar move on India. Previously, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the South American country, Santiago Cafiero, had meetings, in Buenos Aires, with the Indian Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
Other countries seek to join the bloc
Argentina is not alone in seeking to join the BRICS. In June, Iran signaled its interest in joining the economic bloc. In July, three Middle Eastern countries manifested interest in joining the group: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey.
