Argentina could have about 200,000 tons of lithium carbonate for export by 2025, said Roberto Salvarezza, CEO of Y-TEC (YPF Tecnología) and YPF Litio.
“We have the world’s second-largest lithium reserve and the fourth-largest producers of lithium carbonate (…) Argentina could have approximately 200,000 tons of lithium carbonate to export in 2025,” the boss told Rádio Télam.
Salvarezza explained that two companies are currently extracting lithium from the salt pans at the border of provinces Catamarca and Salta, which export nearly 40 thousand tonnes of lithium carbonate.
He added that twenty other projects are under development, most foreign.
YPF decided to enter the market for this resource and, according to the company, obtained a contract with the mining company Catamarca Minera y Energética.
“Now, for the first time, we have the possibility of a national company exploring the resource,” he said, mentioning YPF’s new role in lithium extraction.
Salvarezza explained that the company’s objective is not just to extract but industrialize it in the same way Argentina does with gas.
Argentina, along with Bolivia and Chile, is part of the so-called Lithium Triangle, a group of salt pans in which more than 85% of the world’s reserves of this metal are concentrated.
