Argentina on alert as soy, corn planting progresses at the slowest pace in 22 years

According to the Rosario Grain Exchange (BCR), Argentina’s corn and soybean planting are around 6 million hectares, 40% less than last year and the lowest since the 2000/01 campaign, marking the slowest sowing in 22 years. In the case of corn, planting was completed on 3.3 million hectares, 32% of the intended area and the smallest area for this time of year since the 2015/16 harvest. Likewise, the 2.8 million hectares planted thus far in soybeans are the smallest for mid-November since 2000/01.
Due to this delay in planting, the soybean potential in the region will be the lowest of the last 12 years since “76% of the summer soybeans in the core farming zone will be planted outside the period in which the maximum potential is obtained,” they explained to BCR. In addition, recent rains were insufficient for 75% of the Pampean region, and the crop’s yield potential is adjusted downwards.
Hence, it is expected that more hectares of corn will be replaced by soybeans, depending on the rainfall. The information is from the CMA Latam Agency.
