Argentina records a significant increase in garlic exports

Argentina’s garlic exports increased by 29.21% to 76,200 tons in 2018 year-on-year, thanks to the initiative of ProMendoza. The organ promoted an agreement with the Chambers of Garlic from Mendoza and Brazil (Asocamen and Anapa) to reduce garlic smuggling into Brazilian markets. Brazil is Argentina’s largest garlic destination, however, exports dropped in 2015 due to illegal imports of Chinese garlic into Brazil. In 2018 ProMendoza resubmitted an antidumping duty request for low-quality Chinese garlic in Brazil and a 35% import duty for non-Mercosur countries.
Even though China saw a bumper garlic harvest last year, the price of the dollar helped Argentine farmers to recover production costs. However, Argentina’s market share in the international garlic market is only 3.8% (compared to China’s 78%), which renders them unable to set the price of garlic.
