
Argentina’s meat sector disputes export limits and condsiders strike

Argentina’s main livestock unions opposed the extension of the ban on meat exports until November ordered by the federal government, and are considering taking action.
The entities linked to the Confederação Intercooperativa Agropecuária Limitada (CONINAGRO) explained that they must evaluate the steps to be followed and do not rule out calling a general strike. “They make us take actions that we would not want to take. Together with our Board, we are going to make the decision, considering the damage to the entire chain.”
In addition, the director of CONINAGRO, Nicolás Pino, said that President Alberto Fernández had promised that he would release exports as soon as the price of meat at the counters stabilized. “We respected Alberto Fernández’s promise, but the president did not keep his word,” complained the ruralist.
In turn, Horacio Salaverri, representing CARBAP (the confederation of rural associations of Buenos Aires and La Pampa), indicated that “the level of improvisation and inexperience of this government is really alarming” while suggesting that “it will take us to the same mess they made from 2006 to 2012
