Argentina’s total Illex squid catch reached 50,195 tons in the first seven weeks of 2019, a volume similar to the same period last year, according to the official technical report “Squid. Pesquería 2019″. Average daily catches per vessel yielded 34.6 tons from operations south of the 44th parallel in the same period.
Of the total catch so far, the jiggers fleet accounted for 47,947 tons with the remaining catch contributed by trawlers. However, the average daily catch per vessel has been dropping from week 5, to 29 tons per vessel down from 36 tons.
According to the report, the main catch area is concentrated on the intermediate platform, between parallels 45°/48°S, and the largest catches were obtained in quadrant 4662. 54 jiggers were still in that area with good catches until mid-February.
