Argentina’s TecPlata Secures Certification for Neo-Panamax Vessel Operations

TecPlata, currently the most advanced port terminal in Argentina, operated by the ICTSI Group, recently obtained certification from the Argentine Naval Prefecture for berthing Neo-Panamax vessels.

This achievement makes TecPlata the first terminal in the country capable of accommodating ships of this size, with lengths of up to 366 meters, marking a significant milestone in enhancing the region’s competitiveness in international trade.

TecPlata is not one of Argentina’s busiest terminals in terms of container throughput as of today. However, developments such as the recent certification may contribute to a shift in this scenario. According to the official statement, the certification underscores TecPlata’s advanced infrastructure and technical capabilities, positioning it as the only port facility in Buenos Aires ready for future depth enhancements of the Paraná-Paraguay Waterway and poised to meet Argentina’s growing foreign trade demands in the coming years.

In 2024, TecPlata spearheaded strategic innovations in the sector, including deepening the port’s access channel and becoming the first carbon-neutral terminal in the country.

With this new certification, TecPlata strengthens its commitment to driving national and regional economic growth by offering direct access to global markets and reducing Argentina’s reliance on feeder ports.

“From now on, shipping lines can support Argentine foreign trade with vessels measuring 366 meters in length and 51 meters in beam, directly transporting national products to major global markets. This milestone repositions Argentina as a leading player in global trade,” the company emphasized.

Strategically located in the Port of La Plata, just 60 kilometers from Buenos Aires, TecPlata is a state-of-the-art facility specializing in container handling for export and import, as well as storage, reception, and dispatch operations.

The 41-hectare terminal has an initial capacity of 450,000 TEUs per year and is equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure, information systems, and equipment. TecPlata is operated by the International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) Group, one of the world’s leading port operators.
