Argentine beef exports fall 29.3% in June

Argentina’s beef exports fell 29.3% in June, year-on-year, to around 35,000 tons, due to restrictions on food shipments set by the Argentine government to contain strong increases in domestic prices, the sector chamber said this Wednesday.
Argentina is the world’s fourth-largest beef exporter. However, the South American country did not export its traditional product during the first half of the month because the Argentine government closed the export market.
On June 22, Argentina indicated that by the end of August, local producers could export 50% of the average meat exports in 2020.

The country is suffering from very high inflation rates and the government has pointed to the export market as the cause of high meat prices.
“In June, the reduction in shipments started to become evident,” said CICCRA (the Argentine meat commerce and industry chamber) in its monthly report. “It was the lowest volume in the last sixteen months.”
