Armed Forces inspected nearly 10 thousand vehicles in five months of operation at the Port of Santos

In almost five months, since the commencement of Operation Lais de Guia at the Port of Santos, which is a part of the Brazilian Federal Government’s deployment of the Armed Forces under a legal measure known as the Guarantee of Law and Order (GLO), the two thousand Navy troops have seized 93 kilograms of drugs, along with three firearms and ammunition, as well as eight vehicles and items of machinery.

During this time, 9,540 inspections were conducted (7,445 vehicles and 2,095 vessels). The inspections and searches were not limited to vessels, containers, and cargo; they also included crew members, passengers, and port employees. Until yesterday, 5,973 people (4,543 passengers and 1,430 employees) had been searched, with over 4,500 pieces of luggage inspected.

The GLO is expected to last until May 3rd this year, according to the decree issued by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

The thorough inspections by Navy troops also include vessels berthed at the port or anchored at the harbor entrance in open waters. Hulls, containers, and cargo of 131 ships have already been inspected. The Navy’s diver operations, the institution says, have been crucial in preventing a growing modality of drug and arms trafficking: the attachment of these illicit items to the hulls of ships heading for international waters. The troops conduct more than one diving operation per day.

According to the 2nd Battalion of Marine Infantry (Humaitá Battalion) commander, Carlos Eduardo Gonçalves da Silva Maia, the GLO decree clearly outlines two types of measures: preventive and repressive.

“The preventive measures involve the constant presence of the Brazilian Navy in the perimeter area of the organized port, with marines acting in an adjacent area, effectively within the port, patrolling, setting up traffic control checkpoints, and searching people and vehicles, also conducting inspections on ships that are targets of interest, identified by the Maritime Operations and Protection Command of the Blue Amazon (COMPAAz),” he added.

Impacts on the region

Over 100 operations have been conducted in partnership with public security and enforcement agencies along São Paulo’s coast, including the Port of Santos.
