The Brazilian Artificial Insemination Association has presented the INDEX Asbia, featuring statistical data about the Brazilian bovine genetics market and exports in the second quarter of 2023, prepared by the Center for Applied Economics Studies (Cepea).
The survey highlights the growth in the exports of bovine semen for beef production: 13.6%, representing an increase of 25,459 doses shipped in the first six months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.
The total volume of doses sent out of the country in the first half of 2023 was 211,768 – while 2022 ended the first half of the year at 186,309.
“The main destinations for Brazilian beef genetics are neighboring countries such as Bolivia, Paraguay, and Colombia – the latter has always been a major importer of our dairy genetics. This growing international interest in our beef cattle industry sends a message that the tropical breeds that predominate in Brazil, such as Nelore, have evolved extremely positively, gradually demonstrating significant potential for meat production in terms of quantity and quality, contributing to the goal of feeding the world,” explains Cristiano Botelho, an executive at Asbia.
In the first half of the year, 2.3 million doses of semen were imported, while the total produced was around 8.3 million.
“In total, sales to end customers represented 9.2 million doses of semen. The exports of genetic material for both dairy and beef cattle totaled approximately 408,000,” Botelho reports in a statement.
The accumulated volume in the service model – which involves contracting the collection and processing of animal genetics by the livestock farmer – reached about 953,000 doses.
The volume of collected and imported doses in the first half of the year was 7.3 million and 715,000, respectively.
Regarding internal market sales, 1,403 units of containers up to 20 liters and 978 units of containers over 20 liters were sold. In the service model, 942,411 doses of semen were delivered. Finally, sales to end customers accounted for 6.4 million doses.
Dairy – According to Cepea’s survey, the dairy cattle industry showed an importing trend in the six-month period. The growth compared to the first half of 2022 was 4.2%, an increase of 66,000 doses from other countries.
Moreover, sales to end customers – when producers acquire doses for reproduction and herd improvement – also showed a positive scenario.
The production of genetic material for cattle with a focus on dairy activities amounted to just over 1 million doses. An additional 197,000 doses of this type were sent to other countries. In service contracts, 11,000 doses were delivered.
Producers classified as end customers received 2.7 million doses. “This represents an increase of almost 12% when compared to the first six months of last year,” concludes the executive.
