Asia Shipping announced a more than 30% increase in maritime imports to Brazil in 2024 compared to the previous year. A total of 230,556 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) were handled, representing the largest share of the over 500,000 TEUs transported by the company across Latin America. Key sectors driving this growth included automobiles, home appliances, and tires.
According to Alexandre Pimenta, CEO of Asia Shipping, the strong performance in imports was fueled by strategic segments that experienced above-average growth throughout the year. “Tires alone—specifically new passenger car tires—saw a 15% increase during the period, with most of these imports originating from China,” noted the executive.
The home appliance sector also stood out as a major contributor to the import increase. Sales of these products in Brazil grew by 34% in the first half of 2024, according to data from the National Association of Electronics Manufacturers (Eletros). Projections for the coming years suggest continued expansion in this segment, with an estimated growth of 15.6% between 2024 and 2029, nearly double the growth recorded between 2019 and 2023, according to Euromonitor.
Outlook for 2025: New Challenges and Opportunities
For 2025, air freight is expected to gain importance in imports, according to Alexandre Pimenta. This shift is driven by geopolitical tensions affecting traditional maritime transport routes. “Conflicts in the Red Sea are likely to continue, forcing major carriers to reroute through Africa, directly impacting the use of the Suez Canal. Air freight will increasingly become a viable alternative to avoid delays and port congestion,” explained the executive.
Investments and Strategic Acquisitions
Asia Shipping completed two major acquisitions in 2024 as part of its expansion strategy. The first was Dati, a cloud-based platform powered by artificial intelligence that automates 87% of the import process. This solution provides strategic insights for importers and exporters, enabling comprehensive operations monitoring from order placement to cargo delivery via a unified interface.
The second acquisition was Hórus Logística, a logistics company based in Santa Catarina that specializes in services such as warehousing, cross-docking, and inventory management. This integration enabled Asia Shipping to offer end-to-end logistics solutions supported by advanced technologies such as RFID tracking, warehouse management systems (WMS), and data analytics powered by Power BI.
