Bean imports down in Brazil

Week 202239

Data by the grain legumes industry association Ibrafe show that bean imports to Brazil were reduced by 30% by the end of August. Black beans, historically the most imported into the country, are down by 48%.

“Due to Brazil’s increased production of black beans this year, such a drop was already anticipated. Nonetheless, an important factor certainly was the exchange rate in Argentina that keeps the producer from receiving the full value of their exports since the official quotations are far from the dollar quotation that actually circulates in the country,” says Marcelo Lüders, president of Ibrafe.

In general, he says, the world is experiencing problems in the international trade of most products. “Some countries with serious economic problems had their insolvency risk rates increased,” emphasizes the leader.

“As a result, companies also have their ratings harmed, with a huge reduction in their limits for working capital. Other countries are experiencing climatic problems or crop area reductions due to the lower availability of fertilizers,” he added.

Market

Last week saw a higher trade volume. “As the month came to a closure, buyers mobilized to buy larger lots, some reaching 10,000 bags with up to 30 days of maturity in the northwest of Minas Gerais.”

“The availability of better quality and, naturally, more expensive pinto beans made it more difficult for packers to find intermediate-quality pulses, the ones with greater demand since part of the population opts for beans of good quality, however, with inferior color,” concludes Lüders.
