Close to starting a new administrative period as Gabriel Boric is elected president, Chile has been increasingly importing from Brazilian agribusiness, according to the information available at the Agrostat system of the Ministry of Agriculture (Mapa). From January to November 2021, the total volume shipped between the two nations was 887,000 tonnes. Such a trade pattern generated a revenue of US$ 1.532 billion.
In the same period in 2020, amidst the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, 708.03 thousand tons of Brazilian agricultural products were sent into the Chilean market, leading to a capitalization of US$ 983.56 million. In the first 11 months of 2019, however, 724.291 thousand tons headed to the same country, creating a total revenue of US$ 1.07 billion, according to the Ministry’s data.
This year, forest products were the most shipped items, reaching 308.63 thousand tons sent in transactions. However, the sector’s revenue, which now equals US$ 293.94 million, was not the highest recorded in the period. Speaking in terms of money, the beef industry was the most rentable one, operating in an accumulated revenue of US$ 831.96 million, which comes from the shipment of 249.62 thousand tons.
Chile is also a good market for soy-based products, mainly bran. In the first 11 months of 2021, 50,515 thousand tons were shipped to the country, creating revenues of US$ 39.45 million. In sum, including oil and grain, soy shipments totaled 50,586,000 tons and stand for a revenue of US$ 39.55 million.
Imports
On the other hand, imports of agricultural products from Chile to Brazil are now lower than they were in 2020. From January to November, the Brazilian market received 296.58,000 tonnes of Chilean products, which cost, in total, US$ 1.025 billion. In the same period last year, 346.59 thousand tons of products arrived on Brazilian shores. That is, US$ 804.26 million were spent on purchases of soy-based products.
However, Brazilian imports of Chilean products are higher in 2021 than they were in 2019, in pre-pandemic times. Two years ago, purchases totaled 307.78 thousand tons, which cost US$ 970.51 million.
Brazil mainly buys fish from Chile. From January to November 2021, 93.23 thousand tons of fish were commercialized between the two countries, which represents a total value of US$ 609.75 million. The leadership in this segment is salmon, either fresh, refrigerated, or frozen.
Shortly following, there are Chilean fruits. In the first eleven months of 2021, Brazil purchased 60,81 thousand tons of fruits which were worth US$ 113 million. Apples, kiwis, as well as walnuts and chestnuts, were the products in this sector most imported by Brazil.
