Beef slaughters fall and chicken and swine slaughter rise in the 1st quarter of 2021

The slaughter of cattle fell, and that of pigs and chicken grew in the first quarter of this year, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), released this Tuesday, June 8.
6.56 million head of cattle were slaughtered between January and March 2021, 10.6% less than in the same months of 2020 and 10.9% more than in the 4th quarter of 2020. This was the lowest level since the 1st quarter of 2009.

12.62 million heads of pork were slaughtered, an increase of 5.7% compared to the first quarter of 2020 and 0.6% compared to the last quarter of 2020. It was the highest level for a 1st quarter since 1997.
During the period, 1.57 billion chickens were slaughtered, 3.3% more than in the same period in 2020 and 0.7% more than the 4th quarter of 2020. This is the highest level reached since these statistics began being recorded in 1997.
