The Pará State Government, through its sustainability secretariat Semas, has authorized Pará State Docks Company to carry out dredging activities in the Organized Port of Belém, including the Miramar and Outeiro Petrochemical Terminals. This authorization is effective until June 28, 2026.
The dredging project, which involves removing approximately 6.5 million cubic meters of material, is a crucial part of Belém’s preparations for the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 30) scheduled for November. Mauro O’de Almeida, Secretary of Environment and Sustainability of Pará, emphasized this initiative’s importance as a lasting infrastructure legacy for the city.
“This project will allow Belém to receive large vessels, such as cruises, facilitating the arrival of numerous COP participants,” stated Secretary Almeida.
Semas has stipulated the guidelines the project must observe, which include a geochemical assessment study of the dredged material. Pará State Docks Company must also submit a detailed dredging timetable, select the better-suited technology for this purpose, and implement emergency response plans.
Strict preventive measures must be implemented during dredging operations to prevent erosion, dust, noise, and contamination of soil and water resources. Only secondary activities with proper licensing will be permitted, and any environmental incidents must be promptly reported to Semas.
A dredging simulation was recently conducted in São Paulo, involving several institutions, including the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). Another simulation test is scheduled for next Sunday.
Rodolpho Zahluth Bastos, Deputy Secretary of Environmental Management and Compliance at Semas, emphasized that these strict regulations are designed to ensure the quality and safety of the dredging service while minimizing environmental impacts. He underscored the state government’s commitment to sustainability and ecological responsibility while executing large-scale infrastructure projects. The entire process will occur under the watchful guidance of the Extraordinary Secretariat for COP 30 and the COP 30 State Committee.
