Bird flu cases prompt Canada to restrict poultry and egg imports from the US

Canada is restricting poultry and egg imports from several US states.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has issued a notice that all poultry products and by-products not fully cooked, canned, or hermetically sealed coming from “restricted zones” cannot be brought into Canada.
Among these restricted zones are the neighboring state of Michigan and 20 others.
According to the CBSA statement, the ban is part of measures implemented by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to protect the country’s poultry resources from reported avian influenza outbreaks in the listed states.
Canada residents who choose to continue with poultry or egg imports must provide evidence that they were produced and purchased in areas other than the restricted ones, the CBSA says.
Restricted items include:
- live birds and hatching eggs;
- Eggs, yolks, egg whites (albumen);
- Poultry meat (except fully cooked, canned, and commercially sterile meat products);
- Raw pet foods containing poultry products;
- Feathers;
- Poultry manure;
- Laboratory material containing poultry products/by-products.
CBSA says these measures are a normal part of Canada’s disease control efforts. There is no food safety risk associated with these products, but these measures prevent the introduction of avian influenza into the country.
