This week during a meeting in Argentina, the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, will assume the presidency of Mercosur.
According to the spokesman for the presidency, Otavio Rego Barros, with his new position, Bolsonaro wants to propose a free trade agreement between Mercosur and the United States.
The idea is to continue with the opening of markets (with the signing of commercial agreements) and to revise common external tariffs. Besides the United States, the idea is to make deals with Canada and South Korea.
This week a treaty will also be signed to eliminate international roaming charges on calls between countries in the bloc (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay).
Another idea from the Brazilian presidency is to have projects that show the citizens of the member countries that the economic bloc fulfills a function. One of these is the shared use of the consulate network.
For example, a Brazilian who is in a European city that has no Brazilian representation, but where Argentina has a consulate, can use the services of the neighboring country.
In addition, governments will be encouraged to share more security data on people crossing borders – there are no new obligations among law enforcement agencies and members, according to Brazilian diplomats. The goal is to increase safety.
