By 2030, Brado will invest R$260 million in the Sumaré (SP) and Rondonópolis (MT) terminals, with the majority of the amount (R$200 million) allocated to the Sumaré unit in São Paulo. These investments are part of the Carrossel project and will focus on increasing the terminal’s static capacity and improving logistics infrastructure, directly enhancing the efficiency of truck unloading in Sumaré.

Currently, the Sumaré unit can handle 150 trucks per day, and this number is expected to increase to 400 trucks per day in the coming years.

“These improvements will open a new market with great potential: the importation of inputs for the industries in the region, in the Santos – Sumaré flow,” said Luciano Johnsson, CEO of Brado. “This will be Brado’s main investment over the next 5 years,” he added.

New Logistics for Regional Development

The Campinas Administrative Region, which includes Sumaré, is the largest contributor to Brazil’s industrial wealth, according to a study by the State System of Data Analysis Foundation (Seade) based on the Annual Industrial Survey (PIA) from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In 2021, the Campinas RA accounted for 11.8% of the country’s Industrial Transformation Value (VTI), which reached R$2.2 trillion.

The importation between Santos and Sumaré will occur on the return route of the export operations of Latin America’s largest port, making it a multimodal alternative to expedite container flows. “The Brado terminal in Sumaré is a railway hub, connecting not only the Central-West and North regions to the ports of Santos and Itaguaí (RJ) but also the ports to each other and the agribusiness to the industry,” said Johnsson.

About 50% of the investments will be directed to new cranes equipped with automation technology for Sumaré and Rondonópolis. These RTGs or RMGs are cranes used to move and stack containers, reducing operation time and optimizing yard space by stacking more containers in the same column.

The equipment purchase was formalized in November 2024 with the Chinese company Jiangsu Rainbow Industrial Equipment (RIC), the supplier of the GENMA-KALMAR brand. The plan is to install and begin operations of three units by early 2026, two at the São Paulo terminal and one at the Mato Grosso terminal.

“We are excited about the partnership with Jiangsu Rainbow for the first automated RTG operation on railways in Latin America. This agreement represents a significant step in the modernization and efficiency of our terminals, transforming the operational experience and setting a new standard of excellence in the sector,” said Michelle Braga, Brado’s Executive Supply Manager.

Rainbow’s Brazilian representative, GV Logística, will maintain the equipment. “We will provide comprehensive support through our technicians specialized in GENMA-KALMAR cranes, ensuring the success of this automated gantry crane project for Brado and its customers.” The deal also involved the consulting firm JC Platero, which provided technical and strategic guidance.

The remainder of the investment in Sumaré will be used for the construction of offices, warehouses, yard expansion, and the terminal’s qualification to operate as a Special Customs Dispatch Area for Export (Redex). In Rondonópolis, yard expansion is also planned. Both terminals will also implement technology systems and tools to support operational growth.
