In the first half of this year, Braskem reduced the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) by 83% with the transport of containers via Tecon Santa Clara, Wilson Sons’ waterway terminal, according to an estimate made by Tecon.
“The calculation of emissions uses the methodology of the Brazilian GHG Protocol and takes into account the amount of fuel used by trucks and barges to transport the same volume of cargo on the Triunfo – Rio Grande route”, explains Cleiton Lages, Manager of SMS from the terminal.
Between January and June 2021, 49% of all containers loaded with Braskem products were moved by Tecon Santa Clara and transported by barges to Tecon Rio Grande. There, they were embarked on long-haul ships for export and cabotage.
In 2016, the partnership between Tecon Rio Grande and Braskem reactivated Pier IV at Terminal Santa Clara and marked the resumption of cargo transport along the Jacuí River. The initiative continues to be seen by the market as an environmentally cleaner and important alternative for reducing logistical and operating costs.
With two barges, Tecon Santa Clara has four weekly stopovers in Rio Grande. The import, export and cabotage services begin or end in the cities of Farroupilha, Carlos Barbosa, Garibaldi, Caxias do Sul, Veranópolis, Cruz Alta, Lajeado, Taquari, and Serafina Corrêa. In addition to resins, the main cargoes transported are wood, rubber, and frozen chicken. Among the services provided by the terminal is the possibility to load and unload products in containers.
